Big Clearance of Homeless Camps Downtown Set for 10.4.2021(?)
There are homeless people who for a variety of reasons must or prefer to sleep outdoors rather than in a homeless shelter; these are the public visage in many cities in the USA, and I would think that my Louisville has camping-homeless-demographics, about 1% of the total population of this Metro, which rival those of places more-notorious for 'rough sleepers' like cities in California.
This is a liberal and progressive city. What the city fathers/mothers say about what needs to be done with this segment of homeless folk speaks to an official compassion which must at the same time consider what must be much psychosocial disdain/aversion for the spectacle of people living in tents-- and with less protection-- on city sidewalks. . . so noticeably this shows at Derby/Breeders'-Cup times when these folks are gathered and placed in an out-of-site building-space-alloted.
The official line is "these poor people are in jeopardy: we will help them find nicer places to live." This is not fake talk, but beneath the polite banter is a general civil understanding that here is something disgraceful, repugnant, bad-politics too. Thus the call goes out rather cyclicly=> get those untidy people out of sight out of mind "put away," but (here in Louisville) be nice about it, in the way you say "Get out of there!"
No the campers may not be angelic presence in this city, and I for one as clubbed by a camper in what seemed to be a 'territorial aggression' can say that there can occur criminal acts in their midst, at their hands. There are some most-unsalutary reasons for so-camping, including a sector-- perhaps a minority-- that do so to use illicit substances or ethanol. My gaze on this situation with a view toward intervening for eventual blog-journalism with reach for information about eviction court relations and human rights mandates will not be PollyAnna-type super-optimism. I shall prepare slowly with some view to start 'friendly visiting' the APPROVED PLANNED homeless campsite on Brook at College Streets. I wish not to do this visitation for journalism alone, but will get some clearance from a reputable NPO and likeliest, the City of Louisville Resilience Office as well.
At any rate, as the approved camp will not operate until late this fall, it should be noted by these presents that I SHALL NOT GO NEAR THE EVICTIONS DOWN CLOSE TO WAYSIDE CHRISTIAN MISSION AND JACKSON/JEFFERSON/PRESTON STREETS BUT WILL MONITOR AS I CAN THESE SAD PROCEEDINGS FROM A DISTANCE, YES FROM LOCAL NEWS MEDIA, VICARIOUSLY.
